Biodiversity begins where people decide to make a difference together.

There are places you don't need to make more beautiful. You only need to give them the chance to come even more alive.

That is the idea from which KURBI was born.

Bierbeek is one of the most beautiful rural municipalities in Flemish Brabant. The open agricultural landscapes, the sunken lanes, the fertile soils and the many walking and cycling routes make the municipality a special environment where agriculture, nature and recreation have met for generations. At the same time, biodiversity is also under pressure here.

KURBI wants to contribute to this in a positive and constructive way. Not by making big promises. Rather, by realising local, visible and professionally developed biodiversity projects that can grow year after year.

A project that brings people together

KURBI believes that biodiversity is not the task of a single government, a single nature association or a single farmer.

On the contrary. When companies, farmers, residents and local authorities each make a limited contribution, a much greater result can be achieved together.

That is why KURBI brings various partners together around one shared goal. Local companies make biodiversity projects financially possible. Local farmers help realise and maintain those projects. KURBI takes care of coordination, follow-up, reporting and quality assurance.

This creates a sustainable cooperation model in which every partner takes on their own role and the benefits become visible to the entire community.

Biodiversity and agriculture

KURBI starts from an important premise. The project does not want to take farmland away from agriculture. On the contrary. We are convinced that biodiversity and agriculture can strengthen each other.

Many farmers have parts of their plots that are difficult to cultivate, less profitable, or particularly well suited to biodiversity measures. By using such zones thoughtfully for flower meadows, natural ponds, nesting boxes, natural grazing or other projects, an additional source of income is created that can make farming businesses economically stronger.

Biodiversity thus becomes not a cost or a constraint, but an additional economic activity that supports the viability of farming businesses.

Companies make the difference

More and more companies want to invest in sustainability. Yet it often remains difficult to find a project that is at once local, visible, credible and professionally organised.

KURBI wants to offer precisely that opportunity. Companies do not invest in an anonymous project on the other side of the world, but in concrete biodiversity measures in their own region. They can see with their own eyes what their commitment makes possible. Their employees can visit the project. Their customers can discover it. And their investment contributes directly to a more beautiful and biodiverse local environment.

Starting in Bierbeek, growing through local cooperation

KURBI deliberately starts in Bierbeek. We do not believe a strong project is created by trying to be active everywhere at once. Quality begins with one concrete, carefully monitored implementation.

Bierbeek has an exceptional combination of agriculture, nature, recreation and landscape beauty. It is precisely that combination that makes it possible to integrate biodiversity measures visibly into the daily life of residents, walkers, cyclists and visitors.

Our ambition is simple. When people walk through Bierbeek, we hope they can say: "Look, that is one of the KURBI projects." What we learn there can then be adapted with local partners in other municipalities and regions.

More than nature alone

A flower meadow, a natural pond, nesting boxes, an insect hotel... On their own, these seem like small interventions. Together, they form a network of biodiversity measures that enriches the landscape and strengthens the living environment of plants and animals.

But KURBI wants to do more than create nature. The project also wants to inspire people. Inspire them to look at agriculture differently. Inspire them to run sustainable local businesses.

Inspire them to no longer see biodiversity as a problem, but as a shared responsibility and a shared opportunity.
